Michael Flannery on the mend as IT Carlow shock UL
IT Carlow 0-11 UL 0-10 (Independent.ie Sigerson Cup)
UNIVERSITY of Limerick player Michael Flannery was taken to hospital after falling heavily during yesterday's historic independent.ie Sigerson Cup quarter-final win for IT Carlow.
The UL sub appeared to suffer a seizure after hitting the deck but, thankfully, the Kerry native was well enough to walk onto the ambulance that finally arrived.
Referee Conor Lane was left with a minute to play and despite a couple of scares as UL threatened an elusive equaliser, IT Carlow held on for a win that sends them through to a very first semi-final.
But now for the hard part.
They have to face a powerful UCC outfit in the last four but there's a sense of unity and purpose about IT Carlow and that will make them difficult to break down.
They have a forward in excellent form, too, namely Galway's Barry McHugh, who contributed eight points, including six frees.
By half-time, McHugh had six on the board and IT Carlow were a point clear at 0-7 to 0-6.
But the picture-book scores of the opening half were supplied by UL centre-back Denis Daly, who banged over two smashing scores from either touchline.
On four occasions in the second half, IT Carlow established a two-point lead but each time, they were reeled in to within a point by dogged hosts UL.
A trio of Niall McDermott frees kept Liam Kearns-managed UL in touch but goalkeeper Shane Murphy boomed over a long-range free to send IT Carlow two points clear again down the home straight.
Daniel McLaughlin reduced the deficit again before that long injury delay.
