McMahon takes over as Lilies chairman

KILDARE have a new county chairman -- John McMahon of Naas -- after an EGM filled the vacancy left by the surprise resignation of Padraig Ashe last month.

There was speculation that clashes with county football manager Kieran McGeeney had caused Ashe's shock departure, something the Armagh man strenuously denied.

Former vice-chairman McMahon, who had been 'acting chairman' since Ashe's departure, had a 103-25 victory over hurling board chairman Eddie Lawler. "I am ready, willing and able to meet the challenges ahead," McMahon said.
