McHugh on song for Monaghan
Monaghan 1-18 Donegal 1-11
A sharper Monaghan got their campaign off to a winning start when they proved too strong for Donegal in this entertaining and well-contested game in Clones yesterday.
Donegal got off to a great start and led by 1-3 to no score after just 13 minutes, Lee Henderson scrambling home the goal. However, they were not to score again until the second half, by which stage Monaghan had an eight-point lead thanks to the accuracy of Michael McHugh from frees.
Monaghan led at half-time by 1-11 to 1-3, Sean Leonard scoring their goal in the 32nd minute. Donegal made a battle of it, and entering the final 15 minutes they had the gap down to three points, with Niall Campbell finishing with 0-7, six from frees.
That was as close as they came, with Monaghan staging a strong finish, hitting four points to run out deserving winners.
