Tyrone thought their task for the evening was to outscore Fermanagh's margin, 20 miles away in Enniskillen, but instead topped Group C due to Cavan's inexplicable collapse against UUJ.

Now, Mickey Harte's men will face Fermanagh on Sunday in Clones, the other semi-final featuring Monaghan and Derry in the Athletic Grounds.

With Tyrone naming a very strong side for January, a scoreline of this type was inevitable.

Cahir McCullagh opened with a point and despite Donegal's massed defence, it was apparent that Tyrone's established players have worked out how to counter the blanket.

The first goal arrived in the 13th minute with a Peter Harte run setting up Ronan McHugh, who rifled to the net.

Donegal might have had a goal themselves just prior to this, when Jason McGee made an unlikely rampage, only for the ball to be knocked out of his grasp by Padraig Hampsey.

Four superb points in the first half came from the boot of Darren McCurry, two from all of 50 yards out as Tyrone decided it was easier to kick accurately over a massed defence rather than trying to break defensive lines or pick intricate passes.

The rout continued in the second half with Harte leading the way.
