McGlinchey slams referee after Deise denied
Wexford 0-12 Waterford 0-11
Relief for promotion-chasing Wexford, who travelled back from Dungarvan on Saturday night with a precious win.
The Déise lost their third Division 4 game by a single score and manager Tom McGlinchey aired his frustration with referee Shane Hehir, arguing that a contentious free given against midfielder Conor Prunty determined the outcome.
"They talk about a mark last week at Congress and there we have a young fella at 19 years of age, giving an exhibition of high fielding. . . he made a clean catch and a free given against him," he lamented.
"That was the free that won them the game. You have to wonder about some of these referees."
In freezing temperatures, Paul Whyte spearheaded a second-half comeback as the home side recovered a 0-10 to 0-4 deficit.
With the sides level, Michael O'Regan calmly stroked over a 50 metre free to retrieve Wexford's lead and substitute Adrian Flynn also split the posts. Whyte took his tally to nine from a 45 but McGlinchey's charges came up short once again.
"This is a massive two points for us," admitted Wexford boss David Power. "I think we should have won it a bit easier."
