McGivney haul steers Longford past Wexford
James McGivney bagged a tremendous haul of 1-5 to help Longford minors cruise to victory at Pearse Park on Saturday.
The midlanders took full advantage of the strong gales in the second half, recovering from a two-point half-time deficit to win this play-off contest comfortably.
The hosts put themselves into the ascendancy in the opening period when corner-forward Robbie Smyth played McGivney through on goal and the young student didn't disappoint, coolly placing his shot into the bottom corner.
Wexford responded when Sean Ring soared to fist a dropping ball into the roof of the net.
This goal spurred on the visitors and they produced their best spell, firing over four points on the trot giving them a two-point lead at the interval.
Wexford were unable to sustain their supremacy in the second half, as Longford increased the tempo with McGivney and Mark Hughes their main playmakers.
An excellent point from McGivney in the 39th minute brought them level, and further points from Cillian Lynn and a well-taken goal from Hughes wrapped up the contest.
