Monaghan's U-21s made the latest statement about the county's growing status as a genuine footballing force by winning a first Ulster title at this grade since 1999 to topple defending All-Ireland champions Tyrone.

The good times keep coming for Monaghan, and for this group of players who ended the county's 68-year wait for an Ulster minor title when they snatched victory over Tyrone in the 2013 Ulster minor final, and then completed the 'double' over the Red Hands last night in the Athletic Grounds.

A strong third quarter earned them this win.

Barry McGinn was their star performer with 0-6.

Tyrone led by 0-7 to 0-6 at the break but Monaghan got five of the seven points scored in the third quarter to take complete control and saw it out for only a third ever Ulster title at this grade.

It was no surprise to anyone in the 4,332 crowd that there was nothing between the teams, who were level five times in the opening half.

Tyrone had their noses in front at 0-7 to 0-6 at the break, with precocious talent Lee Brennan scoring five points, but he was subdued in the second half.

Monaghan suffered a blow when captain Kevin Loughran was harshly black carded after 28 minutes but they bravely fought on, with Fergal McMahon and Conor McCarthy scoring from play.

Monaghan keeper Conor Forde pulled off a superb double save from Sean Fox in the sixth minute in the only real goal chance of the game.

McGinn nailed two frees while McCarthy scored a superb long-range point with the wind at his back, cornerback Barry Kerr also scoring as Monaghan led by 0-11 to 0-9 midway through the second period.

Monaghan failed to score for 14 minutes but another McGinn free settled their nerves and sub Adam Treanor clinched it with the insurance point deep in injury-time.
