McGing strike puts Mayo in driving seat
Mayo 1-12 Kilkenny 0-8
An impressive opening 20 minutes from Mayo that saw them fire 1-5 without reply laid the foundations for a win over Kilkenny to send them through to the All-Ireland JFC final.
They left Tullamore on Saturday as convincing winners as Kilkenny failed to deal with their firepower up front. The Kilkenny men did rise a gallop before the break with four points but that was in response to Damien McGing's low strike to the net that helped Mayo to a 1-5 to 0-0 lead. Mayo added another through Gavin Conway to move them to 1-6 to 0-1 before Kilkenny's late burst saw Mayo lead 1-6 to 0-4 at the break.
Kilkenny started the second half brightly and got another score back but Ronan Malee and Gavin Conway were a constant threat up front for Mayo and the Cats had no answer for the duo in the second half, as they kicked 0-5 with a brace from Malee putting them 1-9 to 0-6 ahead.
Kilkenny kept up the fight and a Conor McDonald point from play left it a four-point game with eight minutes remaining. However, it was Mayo who finished the stronger.
