Their progression was ultimately decided by a 60th-minute point from substitute James McEntee, a Meath minor, who produced a superb display following his introduction in the 21st minute.

The contest turned on a controversial goal for St Pat's in the 49th minute when Robert Keeleghan's fisted attempt was adjudged to have crossed the line despite Cathal Ó Dualacháin's best efforts.

After an error-strewn opening half, Coláiste Eoin, driven forward from midfield by the excellent Colm Ó Cróinín, led by 0-6 to 0-4, with Con Ó Ceallacháin, Colm Ó Néill, Ó Cróinín and Eoghan Ó Naoire all kicking fine scores from play.

St Pat's restored parity within two minutes of the restart thanks to Niall Lyons and McEntee, with Ó Cróinín's hamstring injury limiting his side's effectiveness in the aerial duels.

However, Cillian Ó Seanáin produced a sublime moment of skill when netting in the 34th minute from an acute angle and Ó Ceallacháin could well have settled the tie three minutes later but his cross-shot from close range rebounded to safety off Cian Farnan's left-hand upright.
