McEntee on the mark as Royals steamroll Carlow
Meath 1-17 Carlow 1-3
Leinster MFC Losers group
MEATH minor footballers will have learned precious little about their potential following this 14-point victory over a poor Carlow side in this knock-out championship tie involving first-round losers at Dr Cullen Park last night.
A total of 10 Meath players shared in the scoring -- including all six starting forwards -- as the Royal County controlled the game much as they pleased.
Carlow, seven-point losers to Laois first time out, were unable to match their opponents in terms of fielding, finding a colleague with the ball or scoring.
The visitors went ahead through a point from play by left full-forward William McGrath in the third minute, and had 0-6 on the board before Darragh O'Brien blazed over the bar for Carlow on 21 minutes when a goal beckoned.
By half-time, Meath led 0-7 to 0-3 and had extended their advantage to eight points before Carlow were awarded a 43rd-minute penalty, which Darragh O'Brien cracked low to the Meath net.
But that score failed to spark a home comeback. Instead, Meath took absolute control and midfielder Shane McEntee's 48th-minute goal put his side 1-13 to 1-3 ahead, with four further unanswered points being added by Meath before the end.
Meath previously lost their opening round tie with Louth by two points.
