A leading Donegal GAA figure has called for the new county executive to restore good relations with the media "as a priority".

Former county chairman and All-Ireland-winning manager Brian McEniff said that talks between both parties should begin right away.

The media refused to cover last Sunday's convention in protest at a 'retrospective in-camera' stipulation by the executive.

The Bundoran hotelier said he was "disappointed" that the press were not at Sunday's county convention.

"We need the press and the press needs us," he said.

"This impasse means that Donegal GAA followers are not able to read about how the GAA has been run in the county over the past year."

McEniff said the GAA had to accept that "tensions can crop up from time to time but we usually have a good relationship with the media".

He acknowledged that the GAA might not always like what is written, but that is just the nature of things. "They have their job to do," he said.

And McEniff added that he disagreed with those who thought the media needs the GAA more than the GAA needs the media.

"We have a lot of sports competing for space in papers so we should not cut off our links with the media," he said.

McEniff said he hoped that common sense would prevail. "I imagine this will be one of the priorities of the new executive, who will be meeting before Christmas.

"And after all, it is the season of goodwill."

McEniff said he was "surprised" at the situation as relations between the press and the GAA were generally good.

Last Thursday the county executive said it was disappointed at some articles that were published as the dispute rumbled on.
