McCrann seals famous junior title for Leitrim

Leitrim shocked Mayo in their own backyard when they deservedly captured their first provincial Junior football title since 2004 in a pulsating affair at Charlestown yesterday evening.

The home side made an impressive start, scoring four points without reply and missing two goal chances before Leitrim registered their first score, a Donal Flynn point after 12 minutes.

However, Mayo continued their dominance which was led by Brian Heneghan, Mark Ronaldson and Michael Forde in an impressive attack that yielded a further three unanswered points to lead by six with 10 minutes of the half remaining.

However, in an amazing turnaround, Leitrim responded with points by Conal Gallagher, Cathal McCrann and Donal Flynn added to by a James Campbell goal in the 25th minute to deservedly lead by 1-7 to 0-7 at the half-time break.

In a second half that ebbed and flowed, first Leitrim hit a purple patch scoring six unanswered points to lead by seven points going into the final quarter but Mayo fought back registering six points to reduce the margin to the minimum, but two Cathal McCrann pointed frees in time added on secured a famous Leitrim victory.
