MONAGHAN held out against a resurgent Cavan in an exciting contest that built to a nerve-tingling finish in Clones.

While Cavan got off to the brighter start with three early points in the opening five minutes, Monaghan took control with two quick-fire goals, through Ryan McAnespie in the 10th minute and Conor McCarthy in the 11th.

From there, the home side went on to dominate play for the remainder of the first half, at the end of which they led 2-8 to 0-8.

In the second half, Monaghan started well and extended their lead but then had to endure long periods of Cavan pressure.

A point from Cavan substitute Greg McGovern reduced the gap to five, before a goal by another substitute, Liam Galligan, brought the margin down to two.

Donal Meegan eased the pressure somewhat for Monaghan with a point near full time.

The game moved into injury-time with the game on a knife-edge, 2-11 to 1-11.

Tom Hayes tapped over a free for Cavan to reduce the gap to two points again but the final whistle came too early for Cavan and Monaghan held on to book their place in the final against Tyrone on July 21.
