Mayo leapfrog Cork to qualify for league semi-final

Published 07/04/2013 | 17:00

MAYO are through to this year's Division One semi-final after a slender 0-11 to 0-10 away to Cork.

Kevin McLoughlin and Aidan Walsh exchange early scores before Fintan Goold and Daniel Goulding put the Rebels into a two-point lead.

Further points from Goulding and Mark Collins saw Conor Counihan's men revelling with the elements in their favour.

By the time McLoughlin added his second free, Mayo trailed by 0-7 to 0-2.

Paudi Kissane's point was cancelled out by Michael Conroy as Mayo looked to keep tabs on the hosts.

Mayo had the better of play before the break and went in 0-8 to 0-5 behind at the change of ends.

Donal Vaughan kicked a fine point from play as Mayo cut the gap to two.

Mayo continued to erode the lead and Kevin McLoughlin's fourth point of the game made it nine points apiece.

Daniel Goulding added a sublime free to push the Rebels in front but Mayo soon restored parity through Cillian O'Connor.

It was Mayo's turn to go in front then as O'Connor kicked another superb free from an acute angle.

Despite late pressure from Cork, Mayo held on for a victory.
