Despite being a player short for the final 26 minutes, Maynooth produced a brilliant final quarter to overcome favourites UUJ in this quarter-final at Jordanstown Sports Complex yesterday.

With just four minutes of the second half under way, Maynooth centre-back Ger Brennan received a second yellow card and was dismissed. However, they produced a terrific display and at the finish were most deserving winners.

UUJ dominated the opening quarter, racing into a 0-5 to 0-0 lead after 12 minutes. They should have been further ahead, but Jason McAnulla shot wide of an open goal and Conor McManus saw his effort come back off an upright. When you throw in 12 wides over the hour to five by Maynooth, it shows that the losers have only themselves to blame for this defeat.

Once they settled, the Maynooth midfield trio of Ger McArdle, James Califf and Niall Coyne took control and their attackers led by Nigel Dunne, David Quinn (Lucan Sarsfields) and sub' Mark Hanratty took some excellent scores.

It was the 20th minute before Maynooth had their opening point from Cian Mullins. Two minutes later, a mistake by the UUJ 'keeper gifted David Quinn (Lucan) a goal and, when he added a point from a free, the visitors were just the minimum behind. Colm Cavanagh and McAnulla had UUJ points as they led by 0-9 to 1-3 at half-time.

It was all Maynooth in the third quarter and they levelled with points from Lucan man Quinn, Michael Newman and Coyne. Twice points were exchanged before Maynooth took the lead for the first time with three minutes remaining. Dunne was fouled going through and, from the resultant penalty, he found the net.

Even then, UUJ wasted two further goal chances before their substitute, Caolan O'Boyle, stabbed the ball to the Maynooth net following a goalmouth scramble. However, in a nail-biting finish, Maynooth held out for victory.
