Martin Breheny: One crucial point: Kingdom still alive

IN 2008, Tyrone beat Mayo by a point in a football qualifier at Croke Park after the Connacht men had a perfectly good claim for a last-minute free turned down. In 2009, Kerry beat Sligo by a point in a qualifier in Tralee after the visitors missed a 67th-minute penalty. In 2010, Cork were taken to extra-time by Limerick before winning a qualifier. The All-Ireland winners in 2008/09/10? Tyrone, Kerry and Cork.

The moral of the story? The qualifiers are about survival -- not about how it is achieved.

So, ignore the blather about Kerry's demise because they were run so close by Westmeath.

A similar experience didn't do them much harm three years ago, now did it?
