A Cian Madden goal on 54 minutes proved pivotal as Cavan won a pulsating Ulster MFC quarter-final victory in front of 3,140 spectators at Kingspan Breffni Park yesterday.

Madden’s goal catapulted Cavan into a 3-13 to 1-14 lead and left Monaghan with too much to do in the run-in.

In a hugely exciting clash, James Smith netted for Cavan as they amassed a five-point lead inside the opening 12 minutes, only to be held scoreless from there till two minutes into the second-half.

Everything the visitors touched between the 18th and 29th minutes turned to gold, as points rained in on Cavan’s goal like confetti at a wedding.

With dynamic midfielder Dean Donnelly leading the way, Monaghan notched eight unanswered points, including gems from Robert McAlister (two) and livewire full-forward Sean Burns.

Cavan went into the break trailing by 1-5 to 0-11, but James Smith bagged his second goal (39) as they hit their opponents for 1-5 without reply.

Conor Doyle pointed (43) to stop the rot and McAlister goaled (52) to cut Cavan’s lead to 2-13 to 1-14, but Madden’s strike sealed it.
