Lyng's late point helps impressive Wexford sink Antrim
WEXFORD turned up the heat but it was too late to secure promotion despite a fully merited two-point victory over Antrim in this excellent clash at Wexford Park yesterday.
Despite defeat, Antrim, along with Sligo, have secured promotion and a place in the final, but despite battling back from a dreadful start they allowed Wexford to nick it in the end with points from Ciaran Lyng and Shane Roche.
Antrim were slow from the off and it was Wexford who capitalised with a blazing start. After Ben Brosnan pointed a free within two minutes, Eric Bradley scored a magnificent goal, shooting to leave the home side leading 1-1 to 0-0 after four minutes.
Antrim opened their account in the fifth minute with a Tommy O'Neill point before going on to kick three unanswered points through Michael McCann, Tomas McCann and Gerard O'Boyle, to bring the sides level 1-1 to 0-4 after 14 minutes.
Two pointed frees from Lyng close to the break left Wexford leading 1-6 to 0-8 at the interval. Within two minutes of the restart a Cunningham free had the sides level, but with David Murphy superb at centre-back for Wexford, they managed to withstand the early second-half Antrim onslaught.
The sides were level 1-9 to 0-12 with 12 minutes left, and it was a Lyng point three minutes from the end that restored Wexford's lead. Roche pointed a 70th-minute free to secure victory.
