Home advantage proved no solace to Clare as a Michael Quinn-inspired Longford worked their way into Round 3A of the qualifiers last night.

Brian Kavanagh kicked 1-5 for Longford, but Dessie Reynolds' fortunate goal helped Jack Sheedy's side to the win, but they were made to fight all the way by the Banner men.

After a Gary Brennan point, Brian Kavanagh had the easy task of kicking Longford's first point from a third minute free, but at the other end a sweet score from Tubridy made it 0-2 to 0-1.

A pin-point pass from Michael Quinn into Connerton forced Ciaran Russell into the concession of a penalty, which Kavanagh drilled high, into the roof of the net after seven minutes

Longford looked buoyant and points from Connerton and Quinn underlined their dominance, but Colm Collins' side rallied.

Clare had pulled within two points ten minutes before the interval, but a 26th minute goal from wing-back Dean Ryan gave the Banner a one-point lead, which they carried into the break.

A loose handpass out of defence by Russell was punished by a tap-over score from Rory Connor in the 39th minute, but worse was to come for the home side a minute later when Reynolds' point attemot dropped over Joe Hayes and nestled in the net.

That goal put Longford three points ahead, but three frees from Tubridy meant Clare were level by the 56th minute. Wing-back Diarmuid Masterson pushed Longford ahead a minute later with a brilliant point from distance, but he followed it up with a second yellow card moments later for a high tackle, but Kavanagh landed two frees, the lead score a monster effort from 50 metres to see Longford home.
