Denis Connerton's second stint as Longford manager got off to a pitch-perfect start after the Midlanders easily brushed aside the challenge of NUI Maynooth at Pearse Park yesterday.
The home side surprisingly looked very sharp in front of the posts throughout this one-sided affair with James McGivney, Robbie Smyth and Brian Kavanagh all displaying brilliant accuracy from open play.
The students for their part were forced to play catch-up for long periods of this encounter and in truth never threatened Longford's stranglehold on this game.
Longford quickly showed their superiority in the opening exchanges with excellent long-range efforts from Robbie Smyth, James McGivney and debutant Andrew Dalton.
NUI Maynooth did, however, bag the game's only goal in the 22nd minute when a brilliantly engineered move from Ben Buggan picked out Evan O'Carroll just outside the small rectangle and he gingerly placed his shot into the roof of the Longford net.
