Little sympathy as Refs feel the strain

Was history created last Sunday when two referees were forced to check out of senior football championship games as a result of injuries?

Joe Curley (Meath) lasted just seven minutes in the Sligo-Leitrim game while Marty Duffy (Sligo) went off after 50 minutes in the Kildare-Wicklow clash.

Two on the same afternoon?

A pure coincidence, or a sign that referees are putting more strain on their bodies than ever before? As ever, the referees got little sympathy from fans.

Injured players will always get an appreciative clap as they leave the field, whereas the stricken referees had to make do with ironic cheers.

They sure do occupy one lonely world.
