Limerick went down despite giving their best display of the season in beating Wexford in Newcastlewest, where Seanie Buckley scored a contender for goal of the season.
Wexford had to play for 45 minutes without Daithi Waters, who was shown a second yellow card after a tussle with John Galvin.
Limerick, who welcomed back Stephen Lucey, led 1-3 to 0-4 at that stage, Ger Collins converting a penalty goal.
Their second goal came on 32 minutes. Wing-forward Buckley breezed past several players in a 60-yard run before hammering home a magnificent goal.
Shane Roche sparked a second-half revival, scoring three points as the visitors dominated the final quarter.
