IN a blow to Laois, Kildare football boss Jason Ryan has swooped to add prominent fitness specialist Barry Solan to his back-room team.

Solan – from Mayo, who has a sports science background – has built up quite a reputation as a strength and conditioning coach and has worked with the Laois footballers for the past three years.

His clients include the Polish FA and he worked at the last European Championships with Poland's soccer team.

He also does some consultancy work at the National Athlete Development Academy (NADA) in Blanchardstown, which was founded by Mark Kennedy, the man credited with shaping the levels of fitness that helped Dublin win Sam Maguire.

Solan will be also heading up a group of fitness specialists that will restructure Kildare's development systems, which will include Brian McGrogan and Alan Kenny of Moorefield and Steve Sheeran of Maynooth.

Since ex-Wexford boss Ryan – who was a selector with Kieran McGeeney last year – took over as Lilies senior manager he has also recruited former county defender Ronan Quinn as a selector alongside Damien Hendy and is expected to appoint a third selector.
