Kirwan industry lifts Clonmel
Clonmel CBS 2-8 ,
Tralee CBS 0-11
Tipperary's dominance over Kerry sides continued on a heavy pitch at Newcastle West when Clonmel defeated Tralee in a Group C opener.
Clonmel, with three of Tipp's All-Ireland minor-winning side, had the excellence of centre-forward Tom Kirwan to thank.
He tormented the Tralee defence, kicking five points in total and a foul on him resulted in Aidan McGrath converting an early free-kick.
Tralee looked marginally the better side but despite three points from Niall Sheehy and two more from Sean Moloney, Clonmel were still able to go in on level terms 1-3 to 0-6, thanks to a Diarmuid Ryan goal on seven minutes.
Sheehy and Moloney kept Tralee in it until Clonmel's John Ryan found the net in the 48th minute.
Clonmel led by 1-7 to 0-9 at the end of the third quarter and were able to hold out for the victory.
