Kilkenny mucks in to grab last-gasp leveller
THE weather in Mitchelstown was most un-Australian, but it mattered little to Ciaran Kilkenny as his late equaliser meant that Castleknock and Kenmare Shamrocks have to do it all again
"There's a lot of muck on me now but that's what you want, grinding it out with the mates that you grew up with," said Kilkenny (right). "The whole community came out today, it was fantastic to see so many people travel to see a game. You just wouldn't get that homeliness and banter that you get in Ireland."
After Aidan Crowley put Kenmare ahead in extra-time, the Kerry side seemed set to progress, but Kilkenny's fourth point of the match, in the 80th minute, ensured a replay for the Dubliners. While Kenmare had the better of the first half, they wasted too many chances and at half-time they trailed 1-2 to 0-5.
It remained tit-for-tat for much of the second half, but four points in a row by Castleknock pushed them 1-7 to 0-6 clear. Kenmare battled back with four points to ensure extra-time, despite the sending-off of Kevin O'Sullivan.
Kenmare looked likelier winners but Kilkenny had the final say.
