Milltown-Castlemaine 1-13 Davitts 1-6

Mayo teams tend to come to sticky ends against Kerry opposition at Croke Park, and so it came to pass again yesterday.

Milltown-Castlemaine were far too good for Davitts and, as is often the trademark of Kerry teams, won with a bit of style. Superior in every facet of the game, they played with great flair and landed an impressive array of flashy points.

Players like Gavin Wrenn, Cathal Moriarty, Donal Kelliher and Ian Twiss were composed when opportunities came their way, and in the end Davitts simply couldn't cope with their multiple attacking threats.

There was an air of inevitability about this result from early on, as the Kerry team's class quickly became apparent. When full-forward Colm Kearins punched a dropping ball to the net he pushed his team 1-3 to 0-2 ahead, and they never looked back.

Davitts briefly threatened to make a match of it when full-forward Fergal McGrath scored a cracking goal after 25 minutes to reduce the deficit to three points, but by half-time Milltown-Castlemaine led by 1-7 to 1-3.

Davitts scored the first point of the second half, but the Kerry men bagged the next five scores, and the match was all but over.

A couple of late frees from Davitts captain Michael Conroy made the scoreline look a little healthier, but the winners ended on a fitting exclamation mark when substitute Derek Twiss arced over a lovely point.

"It's the culmination of a long journey and nothing less than this team deserves," said Milltown-Castlemaine manager John Fintan Daly.
