Kerry GAA set to rake in €650,000 from New York fundraiser
Kerry to hit €650,000 jackpot at US fundraiser
The extraordinary pulling power of the Kerry GAA brand will be reflected in New York this week, with a series of fundraising events expected to generate in the region of $700,000 (€650,000).
Kerry stars of the past are gathering for the main event, a gala dinner in the Plaza Hotel in the city, which looks set to be the most lucrative of its kind for any GAA county, with 400 attending.
Two years ago they raised $500,000 at a similar event.
An auction and golf classic will help to swell the coffers even more. And a much more generous exchange rate will see Kerry GAA easily surpass that figure on the back of their status as reigning All-Ireland champions.
The event is being driven by a number of high-profile businessmen in the city with strong Kerry connections.
The proceeds will go towards the development of the county's training facility in Currans which will cost an estimated €5.8m to complete.
Some €4.7m has already been raised, including €500,000 from a similar venture two years ago, and the money made in New York and other similar events in Boston and London will bring the Kerry Board close to their target of close to ¤6m.
In recent years the ability of the Dublin GAA brand to generate revenue has been the subject of much focus, leading to potential change in how the GAA distributes money to counties in the future, but the Kerry network looks just as extensive.
