Thirteen-man Cork bagged their second consecutive league victory after a tempestuous clash against Munster rivals Kerry in last night's NFL Division 1 tie in Pairc Ui Rinn.
Cork started brightly with wing-forward Paul O'Flynn moving well and it was O'Flynn's incisive run that created the chance for Paul Kerrigan to bang in a terrific strike to the net in the fourth minute that left Cork 1-1 to 0-1 ahead.
Kerry responded well with midfielder Seamus Scanlon and full-forward Kieran Donaghy both in impressive form. Barry John Walsh and Paul O'Connor's accurate shooting landed scores and by the 16th minute they only trailed 1-2 to 0-3.
Then the match exploded into life when referee Maurice Deegan flashed three red cards in a frantic three-minute spell. Cork defender Noel Galvin was first to go for a second yellow card in the 19th minute, before Cork's Eoin Cadogan and Kerry's Paul Galvin were both sent off in the 21st minute for an off-the-ball incident.
The match settled down after that and a fine point by Donncha Walsh pushed Kerry ahead in the 32nd minute. Yet Cork's 13 players rallied extremely well and two sublime points by Daniel Goulding left them 1-4 to 0-6 ahead at the interval. Goulding added another early in the second half although Kerry restored their advantage with a run of three points, two courtesy of half-time substitute Barry John Keane, to lead 0-9 to 1-5.
But the match swung in Cork's direction once more with Goulding sparkling and his points sent them 1-9 to 0-10 in front entering the final 10 minutes.
Kerry substitute David O'Callaghan made an instant impression when he was introduced in the closing stages and his brace of points left Kerry narrowly trailing 1-10 to 0-12 with eight minutes left.
However, Cork kept their heads admirably and Goulding and Kerrigan crowned an impressive and hard-fought victory with late points.
