Maynooth University raced into a wind-assisted 1-12 to 0-3 half-time lead - and that proved more than enough against an experimental Wicklow side.

Ronan Kennedy scored 1-3 in an excellent performance, the highlight of which came when he fired his goal into the top corner past Wicklow goalkeeper Mick Carey.

At the other end, Maynooth's tackling was excellent, as Wicklow had to work the ball into the full-forward line and found it difficult to get shooting opportunities into the wind.

Wicklow emptied their bench at half-time, sending on some of their senior players, and helped by the wind, they got some points.

Paul Cunningham scored two from balls that broke around full-forward, while Gary Allen and Mikey O'Connor also shot over points.

However, Maynooth never looked in trouble, and another free from Neil Flynn steadied the ship. The teams traded points towards the end as Wicklow put some respectability on the scoreline.
