A powerful finish that saw Gusserane O'Rahillys kick five unanswered points in the closing quarter helped them end a 41-year wait with a dramatic victory over Glynn-Barntown to win the Wexford SFC final at Innovate Wexford Park yesterday.

The spirit of Gusserane shone through in that final quarter, for up to then they had looked a beaten side as Glynn-Barntown controlled the pattern of the game leaving them leading 0-10 to 0-5, with 12 minutes remaining.

But the game was transformed in the closing 12 minutes as the New Ross district stormed back with five unanswered points to clinch a dramatic victory.

With inter-county hurling netminder Mark Fanning spearheading the Glynn-Barntown challenge with three wonderful long-range points from play, it looked as if they were the more composed side, especially with Michael O'Regan stretching their lead they led 0-7 to 0-2 at the interval.

Gusserane's points came through Jack Burford (free) and Adrian Flynn in the eighth and 21st minutes.

It looked as if Gusserane had enhanced their prospects with an excellent start to the second half which produced points from Shane Cullen (free), Sean Rossiter and a Burford '45, to reduce the deficit to 0-7 to 0-5 after 36 minutes. But it was Fanning and O'Regan who responded with points as they regained control, leading 0-10 to 0-5 and looking good for victory.

But two Shane Cullen points, one from a free, followed by a Burford '45 along with a further Cullen pointed free, left the minimum, 0-10 to 0-9, separating the sides, with seven minutes left.

On 60 minutes sub Mark Rossiter brought the sides level, and then one minute into injury-time, another sub Cillian Kehoe lofted over a huge long-range winning point.
