One of the three leading fancies for the independent.ie Sigerson Cup, Ulster University, get their campaign under way when they take on Garda College in Jordanstown this afternoon.

Along with reigning champions DCU and league kingpins UCD, the northern outfit are joint-favourites to take home the title but must first get past a Garda side who made a winning return to the competition when seeing off CIT in the preliminary round.

They were comfortable in that game, with Corofin's Justin Burke grabbing the only goal, but even with the likes of Roscommon's Colin Compton among their ranks, they will be making a significant step up in class when they travel north today.

They'll face the likes of Donegal's Ryan McHugh and former Dublin All-Ireland winner Kevin Nolan among others, and UUJ should have the class to end Garda's interest in the competition and take another step towards glory.

Elsewhere, last year's beaten finalists UCC also get their campaign under way and they'll look to the likes of Cork midfielder Ian Maguire to steer them past GMIT.

Advantage

The Connacht college do have an advantage in that they already have a win in this competition under their belt after seeing off the challenge of Ciaran Kilkenny's St Pat's-Mater Dei outfit in the preliminary round.

However, they are another side who could struggle with the step up in class, and are also coming off the back of a poor league campaign that ended in relegation after a play-off defeat to CIT.

Elsewhere, DIT head north to face St Mary's and they can call on Wexford hurling star Lee Chin as well as Bryan McMahon of Meath and Kildare's Tomas O'Connor. St Mary's will look to Down man Jerome Johnston.

Finally, UL have home advantage in their all-Munster clash with IT Tralee.
