A Seanie Johnston goal 10 minutes into the second half all but decided this all-Ulster division two clash at Brewster Park. Cavan had the much better cut and thrust in attack as they secured the victory with six points to spare.

Only one Fermanagh man scored from open play over the course of the 70 minutes, while Cavan had eight different men register.

The first half was a physical affair with both teams operating a strong running game as their main tactic, although Cavan were able to mix this with some intelligent long ball. Both defences were largely on top however with James McMahon for the home side and Conor Moynagh for the visitors both catching the eye.

Cavan worked their way into a three-point lead with David Givney the fulcrum of much of their good work. Fermanagh were reliant on Tomas Corrigan frees as they fought their way back. The home side drew when wing-back Aidan Breen burst through the Cavan defence, but his rasping shot just cleared the crossbar.

The half finished with a brace of Gearoid McKiernan points, one from play and one from a free as Cavan showed a glimpse of what was to come in the second half.

Johnston hit a neat point upon the resumption and the same player got on the end of the best move of the game to crash the ball to the net for the decisive score of the game.

For Fermanagh Martin O'Brien had a goal chance denied with an excellent save from Raymond Galligan just moments before Johnston raised the only green flag of the night.
