Monaghan produced an excellent second half display to see off Roscommon at an excellently appointed Inniskeen.

Two goals in the final quarter sealed Roscommon’s fate with Jack McCarron, who finished the day with 1-7, grabbing the first after a good run by Darren Hughes before a slick interchange between Owen Duffy and Conor McManus saw the former bat to an empty net.

The result means Roscommon are all but condemned to division two football for 2018, with their fate likely to be sealed when they travel to Croke Park to face the Dublin juggernaut next weekend.

Monaghan led by 0-12 to 0-8 at half time but had Darren O’Malley to thank for the gap not being bigger. First the Roscommon stopper denied Conor McManus with a smart low save while the Michael Glavey’s man was at it again when he batted away Fintan Kelly’s effort just before half time after a sweeping Monaghan.

In between those efforts, Monaghan looked to be the slicker side with McManus and Jack McCarron causing them plenty of trouble while it took them 19 minutes to register their first score from play. Still, they had their purple patch that saw them pull back level on 26 minutes. They also worked a sight on goal for Enda Smith who should have asked more questions of Rory Beggan.

But Monaghan would kick the last three points of the half to give them a four point cushion at the interval.

Roscommon needed a big second half show but their challenge faded as the game wore on as Monaghan joined Dublin, Donegal and Tyrone at the top of the table on seven points.
