IT Sligo and Queens University Belfast have been ejected from the Independent.ie Sigerson Cup for fielding ineligible players.

The decision came after a  hearing of the GAA's Higher Education Hearings Committee last night in Croke Park.

Queens successfully argued that IT Sligo had fielded an ineligible player in their recent 1-9 to 0-8 loss after extra-time at the Dub.

Stephen Doak, who lined out for IT Sligo in that game is currently a full-time Sabbitical Officer with IT Sligo Students Union.

However, Queens were also punished for fielding Stranmillis College students Ciaran O'Hanlon, Tony Donnelly and Greg McCabe in that match because a GAA club was set up last year at the teaching college.

What the decision means is that hosts UCC advance to the semi-finals of the competition where they will meet the winners of University of Limerick or IT Carlow.

Both Queens and IT Sligo have three days to lodge an appeal at the decision.
