Goals were key for a more clinical DCU outfit as they advanced to the Independent.ie Sigerson Cup quarter-finals with a nine-point win over last year's beaten finalists UUJ at Jordanstown this afternoon.

In ideal conditions, Niall Moyna's side made better use of their possession, registering just five wides over the hour, including two in the first half.

In contrast Jordanstown lorded possession in the opening 30 minutes, but struggled to make it count on the scoreboard, shooting seven wides by the 25th minute, with DCU leading by 1-5 to 0-2 at this stage.

Roscommon's Enda Smith firing the opening goal in the 23rd minute, after Stephen O'Brien sniffed out a UUJ attack at the opposite end.

Dublin's Conor McHugh was also impressive for DCU, with his score ensuring a six point lead, before O'Brien turned provider to set up Sligo's Niall Murphy for DCU's second goal.

2-5 to 0-2 ahead after 28 minutes, DCU were hugely impressive, but the gap stood at seven points at the interval, after Cavan's Killian Clarke and Tyrone's Ronan O'Neill pegged back a point each for the hosts.

Despite losing first half substitute Brian Sankey early in the second half through a black card UUJ delivered a more improved showing on the restart.

But the 2014 finalists failed to push on, as DCU finished strongly, with an unanswered 1-2, including Smith's second goal to help them to a nine-point win.
