Waterford ground out a battling McGrath Cup win over UL after extra-time at Carraiganore to hand new manager Niall Carew a positive start to his reign.

Gary Hurney fired five points for the hosts as they overcame a sluggish start to take care of the students. UL rattled off four points in the opening eight minutes. Tipperary senior Alan Moloney scored two of those with Ed Walsh and Liam McGovern also on target.

Moloney was deadly accurate from play and from frees in that first half. The home side managed to haul themselves back into the game, however, as Paul Whyte, Darren Guiry and Gavin Nugent grabbed two points apiece to make it six points each at the interval.

In a scrappy second period, Hurney edged the hosts in front and Whyte increased the lead to two. UL finished much the stronger and sub Denis Keohane chipped in with a brace of points to regain the advantage entering injury-time. Waterford rallied and in the second minute of added time Tony Grey forced extra-time.

Hurney came to the fore in those additional 20 minutes, kicking some spectacular scores. Waterford led by 0-13 to 0-11 after the first period and two points from Hurney along with a free from Shane Ahearne saw Carew's charges advance to the semi-finals.
