Hudson on form as Dubs edge through
Dublin 1-12 Wexford 1-9
Paul Hudson's tally of 0-8 helped Dublin hold off a strong Wexford challenge in this O'Byrne Cup game at St Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy yesterday.
The win, along with UCD's defeat to DCU, sees Dublin into the semi-final against Kildare next Sunday.
Showing flair in possession, Hudson also showed accuracy from frees, kicking over six placed balls, but it was his two excellent points from play that won the game.
As expected, Dublin fielded young fringe players but Seamus McEneaney also looked to his squad, starting with just a handful of what will be his league side.
Dublin opened well, leading 0-4 to 0-2 after 15 minutes with Gary Sweeney kicking two points, along with efforts from Hudson (free), and Gavin Ivory, while Wexford responded through John Tubritt and Ryan Nolan.
With Hudson continuing to punish the home defence, the Dubs led 0-7 to 0-4 after 27 minutes, but then Joey Wadding deceived keeper Evan Comerford to nestle one in the corner of the net bringing the sides level, 0-7 to 1-4.
Both sides were then reduced to 14 men after off-the-ball incidents with Gary Sweeney and John Tubritt receiving straight reds.
Dublin immediately moved the ball into attack and Conor McHugh got on the end of a move to shoot low to the net, which left them leading 1-7 to 1-4 at the interval.
Wexford found greater freedom in the second half and three unanswered points from Brosnan, Paul Curtis and Kevin O'Grady brought the sides level, 1-8 apiece, after 54 minutes.
Two Hudson pointed frees took the lead and Wexford could only respond with a Ben Brosnan free, but it was Hudson who closed out the win with two excellent points.
