Hartnett strikes late to deny St Flannan's
St Flannan's 1-12
Rochestown got their campaign off to an impressive start by seeing off the stiff challenge of St Flannan's in Charleville yesterday.
A last-minute penalty from Gary Hartnett was enough to take the honours for the Cork side, even though they trailed for 56 of the 60 minutes. The result was harsh on the Clare boys as they deserved something from the tie after leading 0-7 to 1-3 at the break.
Rochestown had some superb performances all over the pitch, with centre-back Alan O'Donovan standing out. He tagged on three tasty scores after the interval, as well as making the vital run which secured the last-minute lifeline.
Centre-forward Kevin Hodgins, midfielder Jack Summers and Aaron Ward also impressed, with Hodgins grabbing his side's opening goal.
Flannan's were far from outclassed, however. Top of the pecking order for them were Conor Cleary and full-forward Martin O'Leary, who smashed home his side's second-half goal.
