Hallissey impresses as Rebels take down Kingdom
Cork 0-10 Kerry 1-5
CORK claimed the title for the 28th time as they overcame Kerry in a poor game at Pairc Ui Chaoimh last night.
While only two points separated the sides at the end, Kerry's goal, from Andrew Garnett, came in the third minute of injury-time and offered only the briefest glimmer of hope to the Kingdom before the final whistle.
Up until then, Kerry offered little to suggest they would retain the title. They failed to give Cork any kind of a test and were four points in arrears by the time they registered their first score in the 19th minute.
While Kerry did cut the gap to two points early in the second half, the Rebels never looked as if they were going to be denied.
The aerial supremacy of Daniel O'Donovan was a huge help at midfield for Niall Kelleher's side, while full-back Eoin O'Mahony was assured in snuffing out Kingdom attacks.
Nineteen-year-old corner-forward Kevin Hallissey, who finished with four points, looked lively when given good deliveries and Cathrach Keane at centre-forward and Brian Coughlan also impressed.
Cork were far from perfect, however, kicking as many wides -- eight -- as Kerry and at times their play was ponderous, littered with silly passing errors that allowed their opponents chances that they really should have not have been given.
With the end looming, Cork led by five, and while Kerry pressed, Garnett's goal -- a low shot through a cluster of players -- was too late to make any material difference.
