Guilfoyle ends Deise resistance

Brian Connor and Graham Guilfoyle netted late goals to see off a stubborn Waterford challenge at Carraiganore to keep Offaly in the hunt for promotion from Division 4. Their lethal attack, with Ken Casey, Graham Guilfoyle and Niall McNamee all prominent, gave them the edge on a bitterly cold afternoon.

Wind-assisted Waterford made a strong start and led by 0-6 to 0-3 after the quarter hour as Gary Hurney fired two points, with Robert Ahearne, David Hallahan, Tommy Prendergast and Tony Grey also on target.

An imposing Offaly outfit then hit their stride, at one stage notching three points without reply, including a brace from Casey, to take a 0-9 to 0-8 lead into the break.

In an end-to-end second half, the sides were level on three occasions.

Liam O Lonain put Waterford back in front when he fisted home Tommy Prendergast's high delivery on 42 minutes, but the teams were tied again (0-14 to 1-11) with eight minutes left. Then Brian Connor knifed through to rifle the ball to the roof of the net and, on 69 minutes, Graham Guilfoyle was put clear and he slid the ball underneath Stephen Enright to seal the deal.
