Louth took complete command of this tie at Netwatch Cullen Park to run out 13-point winners over a disappointing Carlow side, whose challenge collapsed after the sides were tied at 0-4 apiece after 22 minutes.
Conor Grimes, playing at full-forward did most of the damage on the home defence, shooting 2-1 from play.
Carlow led by a single point three times over the opening 20 minutes, but Louth finished the half much stronger, establishing a 0-8 to 0-4 advantage before a defensive slip in injury-time allowed Grimes in clear on goal and his finish was clinical.
Louth domination continued in the second half – Carlow went 33 minutes without a score. In that time, Louth ran riot, scoring 2-10. Grimes’ second goal on 50 minutes was a simple finish from close range.
Louth controlled midfield and they overwhelmed Carlow. Benny Kavanagh, Seán Gannon and John Murphy tried hard in a losing cause for Turlough O’Brien’s side.
In the second half, Carlow’s Alan Kelly was black-carded and Darragh Foley red-carded on a second yellow, which was immediately preceded by a black card, while Louth centre-forward Jim McEneaney was black-carded after 25 minutes.
