GET RICH QUICK . . .

Down's form in recent seasons did little to suggest they were ready for an All-Ireland push, but then it's not the first time that a team has emerged from way down the pecking order in the space of a few months to land Sam Maguire.

GALWAY 1998

Hadn't appeared in the All-Ireland final for 15 years and had won only one of the previous nine Connacht finals, but exploded on to the scene and powered their way to All-Ireland glory.

MEATH 1996

Hadn't won a Leinster title for five years (Dublin beat them by 10 points in the 1995 final), but a young team reasserted the Royals as they drove on to

All-Ireland success.

DOWN 1991

Without an All-Ireland win (or final appearance) since 1968 or an Ulster title since 1981, they built up real momentum in a few months to land the big prize.

DUBLIN 1974

Without an All-Ireland win for

11 years or a Leinster title for nine years, their stock was low at the start of the campaign, but they launched an impressive surge to secure the title.
