Garland puts Down to sword
Monaghan 1-13 Down 0-11
Monaghan booked their place in the semi-final of the Ulster Championship but they were made to fight hard against a resurgent Down in Clones yesterday evening.
Monaghan led from the fourth minute with David Garland repeatedly punishing Down's indiscretions and Michael Bannigan a handful at full-forward.
Monaghan led at half-time by 1-6 to 0-2, James Wilson getting the goal in the 24th minute.
Down were a transformed side in the second half and carried the game to Monaghan but the Farney men, to their credit, were able to respond any time Down threatened. But they will know that a similar fall-off could be fatal next time out.
