game at a glance
man of the match
John Heslin (Westmeath)
Heslin was pushed hard by Ray Connellan but he had a hand in two of the goals and landed nine points (three from play) in very difficult conditions for kicking.
Westmeath won't play for a month, while Louth face an even longer wait for the qualifiers to come around. Surely the calendar can be condensed significantly?
There was some excellent score-taking despite difficult conditions, but one Heslin effort from the right touchline in the second half was pure quality.
Barry Cassidy had dished out five yellow cards by half-time but was sensible, given the slippy conditions.
Westmeath 12 (5 in first half) Louth 9 (5)
Westmeath 21 (14) Louth 22 (15)
Westmeath 4 (G Egan 14, J Heslin 23, J Egan 31, J Dolan 65)
Louth 3 (C Judge 17, P Reilly 23, T Durnin 35)
Westmeath advance to face Wexford on June 14 in a Leinster quarter-final. It's back to the drawing borard for Louth who await the qualifier draw.
