Gallagher sinks Mayo youngsters
NUIG 1-21 Mayo 2-16
NUIG produced the goods at key times to defeat a very inexperienced Mayo side in at MacHale Park yesterday
With most of the Mayo senior squad holidaying in South Africa, manager Stephen Rochford said he was happy with the effort from the players, in particular members of the All-Ireland U-21s.
But the man who caught the eye was former Mayo player Adam Gallagher, who scored 0-9 for the students.
NUIG - managed by former Mayo player Maurice Sheridan - were six points clear with ten minutes to go, Damien Comer's goal early in the second half putting them into the driving seat as they came from two points down with an unanswered flurry of 1-5.
Mayo came with a late rattle and got within two points when Neil Douglas pointed a free and they might have stolen the points had James Durcan - twin brother of county star Patrick - not been denied by a fine save from NUIG goalkeeper Tadgh O'Malley deep into injury-time.
The sides were all square at the break - 2-7 to 0-13 - the Mayo goals coming from Neil Douglas' penalty and Danny Kirby's strike to bottom corner.
However, some good points from Gallagher, Michael Daly and the experienced Comer built a healthy lead for NUIG in the second half, and that was ultimately enough to see them home.
