Freeman the key difference

IT Sligo 1-7
NUIG 0-9

IT Sligo failed to make the final despite edging out NUIG 1-7 to 0-9 in their last group game at the Sligo side's ground in Ballinode yesterday.

The home side were slow out of the blocks and it was the Galway third-level institution -- who take on UCC in Sigerson Cup action action this Wednesday -- who raced into a three-point lead by the 12th minute with Sean Armstrong notching two scores.

Yet IT Sligo had the better of the second-quarter and a goal on 27 minutes by Alan Freeman was the key difference between the sides at half-time 1-3 to 0-4.

However, the visitors looked to be heading for victory when full-forward Armstrong put them 0-9 to 1-5 ahead in the 50th minute but IT Sligo -- who will face the Garda College in Templemore in their Sigerson Cup encounter on Wednesday -- finished the stronger of the sides and Danny Cummin's 58th minute point clinched the victory.
