'Free' cash for wily Mayo fans
ONE of the country's top bookmakers was left counting the cost after a number wily Mayo fans made a packet on last Sunday's Connacht final.
Word reached some supporters that Ballintubber youngster Cillian O'Connor would be handed the free-taking duties against Roscommon and they snapped up the 8/13 on offer from Boylesports on the 19-year-old scoring two points or more.
"We took a bet of €650 at 8/13 and clipped that price to 4/7 when we took another bet of €700 on that and cut it again to 1/2. We had several other smaller bets too, so we were caught to the tune of a few thousand euro," said firm spokesperson Leon Blanche.
Until O'Connor's tour de force, Mayo's free-taking had been a major source of concern for manager James Horan.
Seven different players had attempts from placed balls in their scare against London and in only his second championship start, O'Connor seemed an unlikely solution to the bookmakers.
However, O'Connor delivered a man-of-the-match performance for Mayo, scoring 0-8 all from frees as he held his nerve in the wet and windy conditions at Hyde Park.
