It was believed O'Neill would stay as selector with Kerry and Glenn Ryan was the leading contender for the job.

But O'Neill has decided to take charge of his native county.

He has an accomplished CV and his appointment will go down extremely well with the Kildare players who rate him highly.

O'Neill has won an All-Ireland hurling title as coach with Tipperary and was selector with Kerry last year.

Meanwhile, Joe Quaid has been announced as the new Kildare hurling manager.

The two time All Star was the preferred choice of the Lilywhite Executive following a round of interviews last week.

Quaid was firmly in the hunt for the Offaly job but will instead target winning a Christy Ring Cup title in the coming years.

He replaces Brian Lawlor at the helm.

Adrian O'Sullivan and Willie Banks will form the key part of his back room team.

Quaid is one of the top upcoming coaches in the game and will bring huge profile to Kildare hurling.

He won an All-Ireland under 16 hurling title with Limerick and also served as their coaching officer.
