MIDFIELDER James Gordon made light of the atrocious conditions as he inspired St Peter's College to victory over Knockbeg College at Power Park, Wexford, yesterday.

Gordon's excellent work in midfield proved crucial as St Peter's held an edge for lengthy periods, particularly in the opening half when, with the assistance of the wind, they laid the foundations for their victory.

Knockbeg, to an extent, had a hand in their own downfall. They had full-back Mark O'Halloran sent off on a straight red after 20 minutes and then failed to capatilise on the tonic of a 33rd-minute goal, as the St Peter's defence -- through the fine play of Shane Griffith, Craig McCabe and Fergal Hynes -- held out as the conditions deteriorated even further.

By the eighth minute, St Peter's had raced into a 0-3 to 0-0 lead with points from Gordon, centre-forward Mark O'Connor and left full-forward Tomas Power and they went in at the break 0-6 to 0-1 ahead.

An Emmett Malone goal within three minutes of the restart handed Knockbeg a real lifeline, but they were unable to capitalise, managing only two further points through left-half-forward Stephen Attride and left full-forward Paul Kingston.
