Fitzpatrick on target as Saffrons cruise
Antrim 1-16 Waterford 0-6
Antrim kept their high hopes of promotion from Division 4 of the Allianz Football Leagues intact with a comfortable 13-point drubbing of Waterford at Corrigan Park in Belfast yesterday.
The home side buzzed off with a flurry of points and a 17th-minute goal by lively winger Matthew Fitzpatrick, to be 1-6 to 0-1 ahead by the 21st minute.
After the whirlwind start, the Saffrons then seemed to go to sleep. They didn't score again until four minutes into the second half, having led by 1-6 to 0-3 at the break.
Waterford had plenty of possession during that period, but tossed it away with indirect football that played into the hands of the close-marking Antrim rearguard.
Turnovers were the order of the day as the various visitors' attacks broke down. After the restart, the winners immediately buckled down to putting light between them and the Munster men.
Antrim only allowed their opponents three more points as they continued to pop over points during a crunching second half.
After a heavy two-man tackle, Antrim skipper Kevin Niblock was stretchered off in the 53rd minute, but it didn't stem the flow of points from the winners.
